The amount of water vapor present in the air varies from a miniscule amount to around four percent. Therefore, it can be said that on an average, the air will have around 2 percent to 3 percent molecules of water vapor. It must be noted that in dry and arid regions, the amount of water vapor present in air is very little and the same holds true for regions where the temperatures dip low. While in tropical and humid places, the water vapor content in air is around 4 percent.
The reason that the amount of water vapor present in the air does not go beyond 4 percent is the temperature. In tropical regions, when the water vapor content in the air nears 4 percent, condensation occurs. It is this process that impedes the increase of water vapor. However, if the temperature rises, there are chances of the water vapor content going beyond 4 percent.
The amount of water vapor present in the air is measured in terms of relative humidity. Another form of measurement is dew point. Understanding both these measurement terms requires some amount of work.
When there is high humidity in the air couple with high temperatures, it can be very risky for a person outdoors. At the same time, if the humidity is too low, it can also cause health problems.
Based on estimates, around 326 million cu miles of water is present on the entire surface of the earth. This includes all kinds of water sources, including icebergs and polar ice caps. Out of this volume, around 31,000 cu miles of water is in the form of water vapor and rain clouds. Water vapor is a greenhouse gas that helps to regulate the earth's temperatures. Without the presence of water vapor, the atmosphere on earth would be full of dust and no life form would be possible.
